About the Performance

Sami Yusuf’s exhilarating work ‘I Have Come Alive’ was recorded live at the @Expo 2020 Dubai as part of his ‘Beyond the Stars’ concert. This brand new, multi-layered composition fills the air with intoxicating melodies and intricate rhythms. Lyrics are from a poem by the Sufi poet Jalal al-Din Rumi and are sung in the original Persian as well as in English, Turkish, and Arabic. The composition displays a depth of musical imagination that carries the poem’s mystical meaning straight to the heart of the listener.

Sami Yusuf delivers a stunning performance as he is joined by featured artists Seyed Ali Jaberi in a powerful tanbur solo, and Nabyla Maan, who adds an Andalusian flavour with a riveting mawwal.

‘I Have Come Alive’ was performed on two nights as part of Sami Yusuf’s ‘Beyond the Stars’ live concert at the Dubai Expo. This YouTube release is a compilation of the two performances, mixed and mastered for optimal quality.

Dastgāh: Shūr

‘Ya Rasul Allah (Part 1)’ is a traditional song that originated in Kurdish Sufi centres and speaks of love for the Prophet and of the singer’s burning desire to go to Medina. Arabic lyrics have been added to the original Kurdish for this all new arrangement. This recording is from Sami Yusuf’s album ‘Live at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music’ where he headlined the Festival on a beautiful Moroccan night in 2019.

Sami Yusuf’s latest album ‘Live at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music’ was born of his desire to translate for a global audience the rich musical language of cultures stretching from Andalusia, North Africa, and Arabia to Turkey and beyond. His desire is realised here: the music is refined, and whether meditative or ecstatic, it is all connected by remarkable emotional depth of expression. In its melodic Arabic love songs, its rhythmic chants of North African Sufi lodges, its trance-like Turkish ilahis of the whirling dervishes – this is the visionary work of a composer and performer at the top of his game. Directing an international ensemble of master instrumentalists on traditional acoustic instruments – Bağlama, santur, qanun, kemanche, ney and more – and joined by a renowned Moroccan vocal group, in this 16-track album Sami Yusuf delivers all the magic of the live performance that held his Fes audience spellbound.

2019 was Sami’s second time headlining this prestigious festival, the first time was 2009, joining the ranks of earlier headliners such as Ravi Shankar, Paco de Lucia, Youssou N’Dour, Joan Baez, Björk and Ben Harper.
